In addition to positive effects,
development has been always followed by some
potential direct and indirect negative impacts on
the environment. If no prior negative impacts
mitigation measures are considered, implementation
of development plans will entail regrettable
consequences.
Due to increasing global attention to the quality of
environment as well as natural resources
preservation which eventually leads to higher human
health and living quality, development planning in
most countries of the world has been regarded based
on sustainable development and environmental
protection.
The necessity for the performance of environmental
impact assessment (EIA) of development plans was
propounded in the late 1960's to evaluate the
inevitable impacts of development projects on public
welfare and health as well as living environments of
human and other beings. Today, as the most essential
part of study, the environmental impact assessment
of development plans are considered the main tool
for high management decision making.
The issue of EIA studies was first addressed in
Iran, in 1991, followed by taking the legal actions
to make it obligatory. At present, implementation of
most development plans is subject to performance of
EIA studies prior to their implementations.
Background
The background of environmental activities in Yekom
Consulting Engineers goes to long before the time
that performance of EIA studies was addressed in the
country. The Environment Division of yekom was
officially established in 1983 as a support section
to give environmental relevant services to other
departments.

the EIA obligatory law are:

Environmental impact assessment of Soofi-Sheikh and Arab-Soorank Dams and
irrigation and drainage networks, Golestan Province,
1990-91
Environmental impact assessment of Raisali Delvari dam, Bushehr province,
early 1990s.
In the early half of 1990s, the Environment Division
of Yekom Consulting Engineers started to work
independently to pursue the new national
environmental law that emphasized on mandatory EIA
prior to implementation of development plans, and
also in collaboration with other divisions of the
company. The Environment Division of Yekom has
acquired the competency for rendering the
specialized services from Management and Planning
Organization of Iran (MPO), and is trying to improve
and promote its services quality concurrent with
other specialized divisions of the company.
