River engineering is one of the applied branches of water resources engineering that includes a set of activities relevant to planning, design, construction and operation to improve natural condition of rivers.
The ultimate goal of this field of study is optimal use of rivers water, improving the rivers condition and mitigating the negative impacts as well as probable hazards.
The division operates in two sections including 1) River Training, 2) River Right of Way Delineation, and provides the following services:

• River training
• Riverbed and bank erosion control
• Flow regulation
• River right of way delineation
• Sedimentation control
• Flood control
• Floodplain delineation
For being located in arid and semi-arid zones, Iran has always suffered from water deficiency. To benefit from surface water resources, settlement in the vicinity of rivers has been a common alternative for a long time. Due to population growth, especially in the past two decades, industrial and agricultural activities have been grown along the rivers and have created new challenges.
Escalation of destructive impacts of floods, multiplying effects of erosion due to change of land-use, encroachments on riverbanks and riverbeds, the importance of border rivers and international challenges, etc necessitated the establishment of particular office in Ministry of Energy to plan the required studies as well as the relevant implementation activities.
Since 1973, Yekom Consulting Engineers has been involved in several river related projects. However, the River Engineering Division was established in 1985. Since then, this division has accomplished various projects including about 700km of river right of way delineation studies, 100km of riverbed stabilization, 400km of river training and 100km of flood control studies on different rivers.

Experiences and strives of the past two decades have enabled the River Engineering Division of Yekom to implement international projects including phase I studies of North Alkabir River flow regulation in Syria. One of the successful experiences during the last two years is "Aras and Balha-rud Transboundary Rivers Training Studies", in which the contrasts between the territorial/international rights and technical issues of the river engineering were among the important challenges have led to valuable experiences.
